Introducing Issue Eleven cover 5 of 6: Rose Uniacke in full bloom
This past July, during the annual street party on London’s Pimlico Road, Rose Uniacke set up an ice cream stand outside her fabric shop at Number 103. The flavors being dished out—Peach, Honey, Gooseberry, Rice Pudding—were color-matched to fabrics of the same name inside, and both were a big hit with the design crowd.
The event was charming, though as a profile-raiser it wasn’t really necessary; since 2008, the year she opened an antique shop at the corner of Pimlico Road and Holbein Place, Uniacke and her wares have been one of the street’s major attractions. From antiques, she’s grown the business to include new furniture, lighting, homewares and fabric, occupying three storefronts, with a fourth, newly opened space dedicated to paint.
Impeccably stocked and styled, with buttercream awnings and black sans-serif shop lettering, each of Uniacke’s addresses acts as a kind of litmus paper for the others, magnifying a drop of curiosity in one into a circle of interest in all. Her retail sales have doubled over the past five years. “I don't mind that there are different spaces for different things,” she says, admitting she hasn’t thought much about the idea of a one-stop-shop. “And it doesn’t make sense to change, in a way. I love the Pimlico Road. I think the journey is between them—and their slightly different atmospheres and slightly different energies, which I like.”
Interiors are probably Uniacke’s most celebrated talent. She’s a kind of clairvoyant of atmosphere, able to see, hear and feel beyond ordinary perception what a room and its contents are saying. By working additively, she can study, build and edit to a point where an interior feels balanced and “at peace,” as she puts it—“So you end up with someplace you want to be in. The room is an expression of life.”
